River Raft Guide / Youth Leader
cityWILD is seeking qualified river raft guides / youth leaders to join our RiverReach Program team this s ummer. This position will guide raft trips on the South Platte River in the Denver area. Guides may also participate as mentors and leaders with service learning projects and other programs as needed. We are seeking mature and responsible young adults (18 or older by June 1, 2005) to act as role models & team leaders, to teach a little about the Platte River and its environment, and most of all, ensure a fun and safe trip for all our guests.
What’s needed to be River Raft Guide / Youth Leader with cityWILD?
To be a raft guide in Colorado you must complete a state certified training program. Mandatory training starts on weekends in May followed by a one week training in early June. You’ll learn rafting and risk management skills on the South Platte River as well as on other rivers such as the the Arkansas River near Buena Vista . Training like this elsewhere would cost between $350 and $800. However, we provide the training for free with a written commitment to work for cityWILD (part-time) for the entire summer. Here is a quick view of our requirements for hire:
- Complete a minimum of 50 hours of on-river training as a raft guide and complete any required seminars.
- Earn First Aid and CPR certification
- Turn 18 or older by June 1 st , 2005
- Responsible and self-reliant
- Interest in the environment and working with youth
- Ability to haul and carry heavy rafts and equipment (up to 50 lbs.)
We are also looking for people who have such attributes as patience, enthusiasm, flexibility, and good verbal communication.
What will be my responsibilities?
This is a high responsibility position. Your primary role is to create a safe, educational, and fun experience for the hundreds of the kids and adults who raft with us. As a raft guide you will be a resource for guests to learn about the Platte River ’s history and environment. Proper use of language is expected and alcohol and drug use is strictly forbidden
Where will I work?
We run trips on all sections of the S. Platte River in the Denver metro area. However, most trips run the 1.5-mile section between Colfax Street , near Mile High Stadium, to about a ¼ mile from the confluence of Cherry Creek and the Platte . You will need reliable transportation to get to each trip.
What hours will I work?
A mandatory training of 50 + unpaid hours usually starts in late May or early June and requires time during weekdays and some weekends. Paid trips begin in June and end the first week in August. Most trips are weekdays between 8 a.m. and 3 p.m. However, some weekends and late afternoons may be required. Hours vary from 10 to 30 hours per week based on booked trips.
How much does it pay?
You will be paid $7- $9 an hour for each trip or project you work. We are filling positions for part-time positions only. You may also be able to receive a one-hour college credit through Metro State College.

Job Description – Summer 2006 (closing date: May 15th)
Overview:
Seeking a qualified person to lead the on-water operations of cityWILD’s RiverReach Program on the South Platte River in Denver , Colorado . This position will also assist cityWILD as a whole with its other programs. Particular emphasis will be made in the following areas: trip leading, risk management, guide training and supervision, customer service, program development, and some marketing.
Minimum Qualifications:
- At least 23 years of age (insurance regulations)
- Valid Driver’s license with clean driving record
The following must be completed by start date:
- First Aid/CPR certification
- FBI background check (including fingerprinting, provided upon hire)
- 50 hours of Commercial River Guiding experience
Helpful Experience:
- Certified raft guide or trainer (very helpful but not required)
- Commercial rafting experience or significan personal river experience
- Past experience working with young adults and youth
- Supervisor skills and experience
- Demonstrated professional workplace behavior including ability to be self-directed
- Effective communication skills
Supervision:
This position operates very independently, working closely with , and will be responsible directly to the cityWILD Program Director.
Hours and Pay Scale:
Hours will vary depending on trip schedules, weather and river flow conditions. Participation in all trips is required and may include occasional evenings (before sunset) and some weekends. Expected to work at an average of 20 to 30 hours a week. However, most evenings will be open. Hourly wage will range from $12.50 to $15.00 per hour depending on experience.
RESPONSIBILITES:
Guide Supervision and Leadership:
One of the most important aspects of this position will be the leadership responsibility of working with our river guides (including youth staff) and insuring that trips are safe, fun and educational.
- Provide leadership, supervision, instruction, professional development and support to guides, to help them do their jobs to the best of their ability.
- Manage all aspects of risk management
- Maintain all required trip paperwork and records
- Plan and lead shuttles for all trips (comfortable driving a van and loaded trailer with rafts)
- Guide trips as Trip Leader
Training and employment:
This position will co-lead all efforts to hire and train summer raft guides, in conjunction with cityWILD’s Arkansas River Manager:
- Work with Program Director to hire and interview summer Raft Guides
- Lead the training of guides, including hard skills, soft skills, risk management.
Equipment and Maintenance:
Responsible for coordinating with other staff maintenance of all RiverReach rafting equipment and supplies.
- Ensure that all of the equipment is in good operating shape, safe and well maintained, and that there is enough functioning equipment to operate all scheduled trips.
- Vehicle - responsible for making sure that the vehicle is well maintained, operating, not being abused, and available in good condition for all necessary trips
- Maintain an on-going inventory

Marketing:
This position will assist in efforts to increase cityWILD bookings ( South Platte and Arkansas Rivers ) including:
- Leading weekend “Free Raft Rides” at Confluence Park with cityWILD youth staff
- Maintaining, expanding and using the contact database
- Distribute rafting promotional materials
Other:
- Coordinate regular cityWILD programming with cityWILD staff
- Assist with volunteer service learning projects
- Assist the executive Director with program development, fundraising, special events and administrative duties as needed.
